Mass Effect FATE - In The Shadow of the Shepard

Welcome to game!

Alright folks, this is already taking off at an unbelievable pace! We have damn near fifteen players after a single afternoon. As a result, I have invited two of our players, Haya and Catrina, to assist me with GM duties.

This will be a unique game, given the medium. I am going to use the rules but they will be heavily modified in favor of simplicity and RP. I will do my best to record house rules and post them here. However, I will ask your patience as I occasionally contravene the rules-as-written I assure you it would only be for the sake of story.

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.

Reminder - This week is "soft character creation."
I want to help get everyone fully statted out and equipped over the next two weeks, so don't feel rushed, but don't ignore it.

I am looking into preparing an instructional video since I can’t sit around a table with you guys. I will help with the mechanics of character creation, please feel free to start contacting me to discuss. I’ve had very fruitful discussions with about four or you, which leaves almost twenty. I don’t want to help build twenty characters in one day. So hit me up, or MSU and start posting and I’ll tell you when to stop!

Soft RP Opens Monday!
By Soft RP I mean interactions, conversation, interaction are fine, but no hardcore combat, exploration, etc. This is like a "cocktail hour" for your characters to meet and for you to find your voices. Canon RP begins a week from Monday!

Some GM Stuff

First off, I want to let everyone know that I will be assisted by Haya and Catrina in my GMing efforts. They speak with my voice about any issue in the game.

Secondly, I want to briefly discuss gameplay timing and GM availability. As far as the latter, just please keep it between 8am and 10pm in terms of direct messages. If you leave a question on the forum, I will reply as soon as I’ve seen it.

Thirdly, this is Soft RP. No fighting or killing. If you can’t thing of anything else to do with your character, you are welcome to sit out until the game truly opens up next week. And going forward, no narrating the consequences of your own attacks, up to and including NPC death. I am fine with “the full auto burst riddled his body with a dozen bullets” but I am the one who knows how well protected your target was, and how it may hurt our story to have him die, or to have him life.

Please keep the Make Shit Up limited to warning shots, pistolwhipping, and other nonlethal action. Explore, converse, do stuff that drives me to write three pages of fluff!

All that being said, I’m off to curl up inside my protoplasmic coccoon and dream of waking up as Sir Charles Barkley.

Game Starts Monday!!
Please let me know if you're having any difficulty or confusion.

Players who have not made any posts to the forums, or have not created characters by Monday will be manually deleted by me. If you are “cut” in this fashion and still want to play, you will need to actually contact me and discuss your return. I don’t think I will be “banning” anyone, but I need to unclutter the GM interface and since more than half of it is ersatz no-show players, well, you catch my drift.

Starting Monday, guns go hot. PVP, PVE, skill use, stunts and aspects, conflict, stress, it will all go live.

See you on the battlefield!

Game is LIVE tomorrow!
Take a few minutes to look over my earlier posts about how to format an entry and such!

Alright ladies and gents, Active Gamespace opens first thing tomorrow. As of that point, your use of abilities will be unrestricted, and you can feel free to travel (request new Active Gamespace entry for a new area), to enter combat, to shop, to wheel and deal, et cetera. I recommend planning on leaving 6-12 hours’ margin for a response before you start pestering another player (or your GM.) The appeal of asynchronous play-by-post is that it gives us the freedom to work around our Busy Adult Schedules. Please don’t spoil that with impatience – this will NOT be an instant gratification game. But it will be excellent short-form fiction writing practice.

Questions, comments, concerns can come right to me. Many of you have already asked several good, pointed questions and I appreciate it.original.jpg

Shifting Action
Please wrap up any SoftRP

Please wrap up any SoftRP activities and place your character within one of the three “active zones”. If you want to do canon, risky RP things in another location please PM me and I’ll open a thread for you.

GM Announcement

Hey guys, it has been pointed out to me that I have not been a super involved GM now that play has actually commenced. This is a mix of 20% my goal of deep player interaction, and 80% me losing myself in school and school related stress for the last few weeks.

So! I do pop in and check the forums. If you could help me over the next few weeks by sending me a direct message when a post needs reply or a dice roll needs arbitration, well, that’d be huge

. I’m very happy with everything I’m seeing so far from you guys, and I truly am excited to move forward with this game. Thanks for your patience!
